France Leads World in Artilect Debate
"Le Monde" Newspaper Publishes 10th Artilect Article
I find in practice that my greatest difficulty in trying to persuade the world that a
possible "gigadeath" artilect war will occur in the second half of the 21st century,
over the issue of species dominance (with "artilects" (artificial intellects) having
possible intelligence levels trillions of trillions of trillions of times above
the human level) is that such ideas
are just too fantastical for most people to swallow. Even when I present in detail the
scientific/technological justifications for these astronomical numbers, most people,
including a lot of my colleagues (see below for a French example), simply cannot get
their minds around the enormity of
the argument, and the profundity of its moral and political consequences. I feel, for
too many people, my ideas are simply "ahead of their time". It has been very frustrating
for me over the past few years.
It is therefore with great pleasure that I see the world's most prestigious newspaper
(France's "Le Monde") publish (Sept 2000) their 10th artilect article. It is
obvious that Le Monde takes these ideas seriously enough to write so many articles.
I am therefore most grateful to Le Monde and to France for taking the world leadership
in accepting such ideas and leading the artilect debate in intellectual circles.
It is often said that France is the most intellectual country on the planet. I
remember once seeing a literary criticism program on French TV in which
the US popular author John Updike was being interviewed. He was obviously enjoying
himself very much, comparing the treatment he was getting as an intellectual/author in
Paris to what he was used to getting in New York. He said to the audience
present at this TV program recording, "En France, les intellectuels sont les dieux".
(In France, the intellectuals are gods).
I list the 10 articles below (most recent first). Most of them I have translated.
